Research Interests

Early & 19th Century America, History & Perceptions of North American Indians, Cultural & Religious History, History of the Occult, Instances of the Gothic in Culture, Literature, and Film.

I am currently working on my dissertation, "The Spectre of the Indian: Race, Gender, and Ghosts in Spiritualist Seances, 1850-1920," which focuses on the appearance of Native American spirits in American Spiritualism.

I presented my initial work on this project, a paper entitled "Indian Celebrity, Indian Spirit: The Appearance of Black Hawk in Spiritualist Circles," at the Susman Graduate Conference at Rutgers University in March 2010

In October 2010 I presented "Contested Modernity: Conflicting Images of Women in 19th Century America" at the Intellectual History Graduate Conference at the CUNY Graduate Center in NYC.

In 2012, I'm scheduled to speak at the New Frontiers Conference in Toronto and the Nineteenth Century Studies Association in North Carolina.

In the summer of 2012 I'll be teaching a new course at Stony Brook University entitled "Filming American History," which deals with both cinema and historical footage as specific modes of historical and cultural memory.

I am also an adjunct instructor of American History at Suffolk County Community College, SUNY Old Westbury and Briarcliffe College.
