Applicants without Degrees

If you do not have a degree in history or the social sciences, you must complete a course of study equivalent to a Stony Brook undergraduate major in order to be eligible to apply to the MAT program, and many applicants who are changing careers have chosen to meet the application requirements by completing a second undergraduate degree. Please note that, while applicants must complete these preliminary studies in order to be considered for admission, applicants must still apply and be accepted into the MAT program.

Space permitting, students may enroll in the core education courses (CEE 505 and PSY 595) or graduate history courses on a non-matriculated basis. However, satisfactory grades in these courses do not guarantee admission to the MAT program, and no one will be permitted to enroll in the social studies methods courses until they have been admitted to the program.
